Casale is considered as the historic capital city of Basso Monferrato region. It is located in a flat area at the foothills of Monferrato, with about 35.000 inhabitants.
The first inhabitants of these lands were the Ligurians, then the Celtic-Gallics, the Romans and the Longobards since 568.The Sant’Evasio cathedral, built in the 8th century by the Longobard Liutprando, is the most ancient monument of the city and one of the most important churches in Lombard-Romanesque style of Piemonte.
The Paleologi castle is very appreciable: It was built in 1352 by Giovanni Il Paleologo with asymmetric hexagonal plan and angle defensive towers, surrounded by a moat.
Casale Monferrato is famous for Krumiri, biscuits born in 1878.
