Lu Monferrato is a municipality of Roman origin with 1160 inhabitants and located 307m asl.

This town and further 4 municipalities have the Italian record of shortest name, which probably comes from Lucus, sacred wood dedicated to the gods.

The plain of Mediliano, downstream towards Mirabello, keeps the rests of a Roman settlement with agricultural estate of the Metilia family: recent archeological excavations revealed the vastness of the archeological site. Lu had moreover a castle, considered impregnable at the time of Barbarossa. The tower and the concentric of the ancient castrum (delimited by via Onetti and by the actual belvedere) remain from the destruction of the middle of the 16th Century.
